Nurses are acknowledged as key agents in addressing alcohol and drug misuse at individual, family, and community levels. Addiction nursing is central to the assessment, management, and care of people with problematic use of psychoactive substances (both legal and illegal). Work takes place in a wide range of settings, from traditional hospital clinics and wards to community locations such as police custody suites and needle exchange facilities. Addiction for Nurses is a comprehensive textbook for students, explaining the role of the nurse at each stage of intervention. Early chapters approach the subject from sociological, historical, and cultural perspectives, covering significant topics such as the nature of addiction, its social context, and addiction theory. The book then presents vital information about each of the main areas of addiction (nicotine, alcohol, opiates, cannabis, psychostimulants, and hallucinogens) with clinical and practical guidance on recognition, assessment, and treatment intervention strategies. Further chapters consider dealing with emergencies, blood-borne viruses, harm reduction, and work with specific client groups (for instance, black and ethnic minority communities, or those with special needs). This book is an essential resource for all those who come into contact with alcohol and drug misusers and for specialist addiction nurses preparing for practice in this complex and rewarding field.

This book is about the most common issues that confront a nurse on a daily basis. It can cause him or her heartaches, heartbreaks, and heart troubles. Stress is, by far, in my opinion, a leading cause of heart problems, sickness, and depression in this country. In this book, I talk about awareness in our hospitals, clinics, and emergency departments. Everyone should feel comfortable and be confident of the nurse treating you or your loved ones; we must also remember that nurses are also human beings with issues and problems like everyone else in this world. This book is also a valuable asset to any nursing student considering going to nursing school or college to study medicine.

While mindfulness meditation has been used in clinical settings as an adjunctive treatment for substance use disorders for some time, there has been limited empirical evidence to support this practice. Mindfulness-Related Treatments and Addiction Recovery bridges this gap by reporting the findings of studies in which mindfulness practice has been combined with other behavioural treatments and/or adapted to meet the needs of a variety of client populations in recovery. Therapies used as interventions in the described studies include Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP), and Mindfulness-Based Therapeutic Community (MBTC) treatment. The book offers a glimpse into the many ways in which mindfulness strategies have been applied to various facets of the recovery process including stress, craving, anxiety, and other relapse related factors. Preliminary evidence, while not conclusive, suggests that mindfulness-based therapies are effective, safe, satisfying to clients, and that an individual, at-home mindfulness practice can be potentially sustained over time, beyond the intervention duration. This book was originally published as a special issue of Substance Abuse.

This volume sets the stage for understanding the evolution and importance of nursing science in the field by providing a brief historical overview of the tobacco epidemic and emerging science, describing changing trends in tobacco use, reviewing health risks of smoking and benefits of quitting, reviewing concepts in nicotine addiction and evidence-based recommendations for tobacco dependence treatment. Also highlighted are nursing science efforts and leadership in addressing two barriers to mounting programs of nursing research in tobacco control: the lack of nursing education and training in tobacco control and the limited research funding and mentorship. Finally, the contributors to this volume address the issue of smoking in the profession as it influences nurses' health, interventions with patients, and, potentially, scholarship efforts.

This companion book to the HBO documentary of the same name sheds light on the hidden American epidemic of addiction. Blending compelling personal narratives with statistics and expert opinion, all gleaned from over two years of research and reporting, ADDICTION offers a comprehensive and provocative look at the impact of chemical dependency on addicts, their loved ones, society, and the economy. Breaking the stigma that addicts are simply weak and immoral, it delves into new brain research proving that drugs and alcohol change the chemical composition of addicts' brains, making it veritably impossible for them to quit. The nation's top experts persuasively argue that the time has come for the blame to stop and the healing to begin. ADDICTION also features material not included in the documentary: testimonials, original graphics and images, additional elaboration on theories and treatments of addiction, and more. Featuring a foreword by Sheila Nevins, the president of Documentary and Family Programming at HBO, an afterward by the best-selling author Susan Cheever, and the writing of David Sheff, this book is essential reading for anyone who has been impacted by what is now realized to be a very real and widespread disease.

Jean Watson's Theory of Human Caring (Caritas) is now used in approximately 300 health care institutions in the United States and other institutions worldwide. This is the first international compendium of Caritas research, presenting the findings of 41 studies from 7 countries. The book examines similarities and differences in the ways in which each country applies Watson's Theory and documents the outcomes of these interventions. It addresses relationships between nurses and patients, nurses and their colleagues, self-care, and how Caritas is used to resolve outcome issues system-wide. The book discusses at length eight different Caring Factor surveys, primary research tools for those using the Caritas process, which identify constructs that either support or impede caring in multiple settings. The first section focuses on the theoretical underpinnings of Caritas and presents seven adaptations of the Caring Factor Survey. Section II addresses measurements and methods for facilitating a caring relationship between nurse and patient. Measurements and interventions to facilitate Caritas in a variety of settings is the focus of Section III, and the final sections address the international measurement and international comparisons of Caritas. The volume will be an important resource for nurse leaders, educators, administrators in academia including unit managers, and for hospitals with or seeking Magnet status. The book serves as a complement to Watson's Assessing and Measuring Caring in Nursing and Health Care and Creating a Caring Science Curriculum: An Emancipatory Pedagogy for Nursing. A co-publication with the Watson Caring Institute, this volume: Presents cutting-edge tools derived from the Caring Factor Survey for measuring caring in multiple contexts Discusses similarities and differences in caring contexts across nations Documents outcomes of Caritas in varied settings in the United States and internationally Addresses nurse-patient and nurse-colleague relationships, self-care, and resolution of system-wide outcome issues

The new edition upholds the premise that knowledge about research process and design is mandatory in today's health care arena, and that all nurses and midwives need to understand research findings and their implication for changing practice. It is completely revised with many new chapters. The text has been restructured into three sections. Section 1 Research Awareness sets the scene for the importance of nursing and midwifery research and provides an overview of research theory and practice as processes. Chapters on searching for and reviewing the literature provide detailed advice for undergraduates and facilitate access to research articles online. One of the new chapters discusses ethical issues in Australia and New Zealand. Section 2 Appreciation and Application provides a detailed discussion of qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods research approaches with many useful examples from the clinical area. Section 3 Conducting primary research is new and is designed to accommodate both undergraduate and postgraduate students in their research effort. Writing research proposals may be a requirement for undergraduates in their research program and postgraduates will find the information useful for undertaking a higher degree or applying for university or external funding. This final Section is also useful as a guide on disseminating and publishing conducted research findings. Combined Australian and New Zealand editorship ensures greater trans-Tasman coverage, awareness and relevance. Contributions from international luminaries are balanced by a heightened focus on research conducted within Australia and New Zealand. New edition conscientiously recognises midwifery research as related to but independent from nursing. The research process-driven approach is directed towards ‘consumers' of research, and the comprehensive coverage extends from undergraduate through to a postgraduate level of knowledge. Expanded pedagogy includes Key Terms and Learning Outcomes at the beginning of each chapter; Icons throughout that direct readers to web-based material; Evidence-based Tips, Research in Brief boxes and Points to Ponder for constant reinforcement that links evidence to practice. Integrated Tutorial Triggers with suggested answers provided and Multiple Choice Questions enable students to assess their understanding of key points. Evolve Website provides True/False questions and access to journal articles cited in the text, with additional reflective questions. Australian adaptation of Nursing Research: Lobiondo-Wood & Haber
